Head of Risk Analytics & Decision Science

Full-time

Bluefin Resources

  • Structured L&D, senior mentoring and genuine autonomy in a high-trust, collaborative team.
  • Work across brand, product and customer experience with exposure to market research, analytics and marketing science.
  • Head of Risk and Decision Science

    About the Business
Our client is a fast-growing, founder-led Australian fintech backed by credible investors and scaling toward its next major growth milestone. Their platform facilitates payments for B2B customers and their own customers in turn, underpinned by a proprietary payment-matching algorithm, all built and owned in-house, including every model and system currently in production.

    The Opportunity
This is a genuinely hands-on build role, not a pure oversight position. There is no separate technology function implementing risk decisions here and you'll personally design, build and deploy the automated credit and fraud decisioning systems that run live in the business, while also owning the governance and stakeholder relationships that come with being the most senior risk professional in the company. You'll report directly to the CEO with visibility to the Board Risk Committee, and you'll need to be equally comfortable creating a model as you are defending its outcome, in numbers, to a commercial leadership team.

    What you'll do

    • Personally design, build and deploy automated credit and fraud decisioning models into live, production systems
    • Own credit, fraud and counterparty decisioning strategy across acquisition, lifecycle/behavioural and collections
    • Own and maintain expected loss and bad-debt provisioning models
    • Set and quantify risk appetite, concentration limits, approval thresholds and portfolio monitoring, reviewed each quarter
    • Translate risk policy directly into functioning models and production systems — not specifications for someone else to build
    • Own monthly executive reporting and quarterly board packs, with a quantified, commercially-framed case behind every recommendation
    • Represent the business's risk approach with funders, insurers, auditors and investors
    • Work hands-on alongside a small, close-knit risk and data science team

    What you'll bring

    • Direct, personal experience building and deploying automated decisioning models into live production environments — not specifying requirements for a separate engineering or technology function to implement
    • A background in fintech, non-bank lending or payments strongly preferred over pure major-bank experience, given the scope of this role spans build, deployment and governance without dedicated supporting functions
    • Fraud and transaction risk modelling experience weighted at least as heavily as traditional credit risk
    • An instinct to quantify outcomes and defend a number to a commercial, non-technical audience, rather than describing results qualitatively
    • Genuine comfort operating as a hands-on individual contributor within a small team, not just leading through others
    • Strong stakeholder presence, with the credibility to educate and challenge senior, non-risk-background executives
    • Advanced Python and hands-on modelling experience (logistic regression, XGBoost or similar)

Please note this role is Melbourne based and requires candidates to be in the office three days per week. Candidates must be Melbourne based or already committed to relocating with a confirmed timeframe.
