Strategic Aboriginal Heritage Assessments (SAHA) Cultural Heritage Advisor (Fixed Term – 1 year)

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Cultural Heritage Advisor to join our Strategic Aboriginal Heritage Assessments (SAHA) team within the Cultural Heritage Unit.

Reporting to the SAHA Coordinator, this role will support the delivery of the SAHA Program through cultural heritage research, fieldwork, consultation and reporting across Wadawurrung Country. You will work closely with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and project stakeholders to identify and record cultural heritage values and support the early and meaningful consideration of Aboriginal Cultural Heritage in land use planning and development.

Key Responsibilities

In this role you will:

• Undertake cultural heritage research, fieldwork and assessment activities.
• Support the identification and recording of living, tangible and intangible Aboriginal Cultural Heritage values.
• Participate in meetings, workshops, interviews, site visits and consultation with Traditional Owners and project stakeholders.
• Support Traditional Owners to participate in assessments and ensure their knowledge and directions are recorded respectfully and accurately.
• Undertake field surveys, including field notes, photography, site recording and mapping.
• Work collaboratively with heritage advisors, archeologists, planners, consultants and other stakeholders.
• Prepare reports, cultural values summaries, recommendations and briefings.
• Maintain accurate project records and appropriately handle sensitive cultural information.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A tertiary qualification in archaeology, cultural heritage management, anthropology or a related field.
• Experience in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage management in Victoria and knowledge of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic). 
• Experience undertaking cultural heritage research, fieldwork, assessments and report writing. 
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work respectfully with Traditional Owners and stakeholders. 
• Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
• A current Australian Driver Licence and willingness to undertake fieldwork and travel across Wadawurrung Country.

Desirable: Knowledge of Wadawurrung culture, Country and community and/or experience with cultural mapping or GIS.
