Manager - Forecasting Scenarios & Consumer Energy Resources

Full-time

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)

Division: System Design

Department: Forecasting

Reference number: 13254

Engagement type: Permanent

AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About The Team

The Forecasting team sits within AEMO's System Design Division, which is responsible for planning Australia's future power system during a period of unprecedented transformation. This team produces insights and modelling outputs that are central to how that system is planned, by developing future energy scenarios and then forecasting their key inputs and assumptions. These planning scenarios underpin industry-wide planning, investment decisions and pathways to a reliable, secure and affordable net zero energy system. Critically, the team forecast the consumer’s own investments in these scenarios, understanding the drivers and behaviours of adoption and use of consumer energy resources, specifically the role of PV systems, batteries and electrified transport. The cross-sectoral influences of an economy shifting from traditional to new energy forms is a key influence on the energy transition, and a key focus of this teams’ responsibilities.

Working across many of AEMO’s major publications, the team collaborates closely with governments, jurisdictional planning bodies, industry participants and internal stakeholders to deliver trusted insights that support Australia's clean energy future

About The Role

As Manager - Forecasting Scenarios & Consumer Energy Resources, you will lead a team responsible for forecasting the transformational drivers shaping Australia's energy future. This includes modelling and analysing the growing influence of consumer energy resources such as rooftop solar, home batteries, electric vehicles and emerging cross-sectoral influences across electricity and gas systems to inform planning scenarios. These activities require a high level of stakeholder engagement, and your team will therefore be a prominent voice in these internal and external conversations.

You will play a critical leadership role in developing the forecasts and scenarios that inform AEMO's Integrated System Plan (ISP) and other strategic planning activities, as well as leading analysis that forms part of the ISP itself. Leading a geographically dispersed team, you'll combine technical expertise, stakeholder engagement and people leadership to deliver high-quality, evidence-based outcomes that support the transition to net zero.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Leading the development and publication of key forecasting, planning and scenario reports that support Australia's energy transition
  • Driving innovative forecasting approaches to understand emerging influences on consumers’ investment and use of electricity
  • Analysing the role and opportunities for consumer energy resources, including rooftop solar and batteries, and their impact on future system and network investment needs
  • Managing and mentoring a high-performing team, fostering collaboration, capability development and inclusive leadership
  • Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring transparency and confidence in forecasting methodologies and outcomes
  • Working across AEMO to enhance forecasting capability through the use of data, analytics and consumer energy resource insights
  • Contributing to divisional strategy, resource planning, risk management and continuous improvement initiatives

What You Will Bring To The Role

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a discipline such as economics, statistics, operations research, engineering, data science or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of the Australian energy sector, including market, regulatory and policy frameworks
  • Significant experience in energy forecasting, planning or related analytical disciplines within a complex environment
  • Demonstrated people leadership experience, with the ability to inspire, coach and develop high-performing teams across multiple locations
  • Expertise in forecasting, modelling, optimisation or data-driven decision-making approaches
  • Understanding of changing consumer energy behaviours, energy economics and the role of distributed energy resources in the energy transition
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences

Benefits

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
