Salary range: $75000-$85000 Duration: At least 2 years Job description: Our client, Sohi Produce, operates a well-established farm in regional New South Wales, growing a range of blueberry and blackberry varieties. The business is committed to producing fresh, high-quality fruit for its customers and is currently seeking to employ an Agronomist to support its farming operations. Tasks and Roles:
- Examine, research and address issues relating to crop management, production, yield and quality across blueberry and blackberry crops.
- Develop and recommend improved planting, cultivation, irrigation and harvesting techniques to increase crop yield, quality and overall production efficiency.
- Monitor crop performance and research appropriate agricultural strategies to manage the effects of soil conditions, climate, weather, pests and diseases.
- Conduct regular field inspections and collect soil, water, plant and crop samples for analysis of nutritional deficiencies, diseases and other factors affecting crop health.
- Analyse soil pH, EC levels, moisture, plant nutrition and environmental conditions and provide appropriate agronomic recommendations.
- Assist with the sourcing, testing, trialling and selection of suitable plants and berry varieties based on productivity, quality and commercial suitability.
- Develop and implement fertiliser, fertigation, nutrient management and irrigation programs according to crop stages, environmental conditions and production requirements.
- Conduct trials of different berry varieties, growing methods and production techniques and analyse the results to identify opportunities for improved crop performance.
- Advise farm management and field staff on weed control, pruning, crop nutrition, irrigation and integrated pest and disease management practices.
- Develop planting, irrigation and crop management schedules, including appropriate timelines and input requirements for farming operations.
- Maintain detailed agronomic records relating to crops, field observations, samples, trials and production performance.
- Prepare reports and present findings and recommendations to farm management regarding crop performance, production issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Provide guidance and training to farm staff on agronomic practices, crop management techniques and the correct implementation of recommended programs.
- Coordinate with farm management and operational staff during field activities, crop trials and implementation of agronomic programs.
- Continuously review farming practices and recommend practical and innovative agronomic solutions to improve crop yield, quality, efficiency and long-term sustainability.
- A bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in agriculture, horticulture or a closely related field, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- 3 years of Full Time Relevant Work Experience as Agronomist
- Strong understanding of agricultural production processes.
- Attention to detail and quick decision-making to address quality issues, equipment failures, and operational challenges.
- Proficiency in quality control and adherence to standards.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to coordinate with various departments and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Possess a keen eye for detail to oversee product quality.
