Financial Controller

Derwent

About Our Client

Our client is a Melbourne-based industrial manufacturer operating Australia-wide, delivering complex project-based work for major clients. Founder-led with a trust-based culture, the business is scaling and has the capacity and pipeline to support significant growth.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Financial Controller will have responsibility for the day-to-day commercial finance operations of the business. The role will drill into project-level financials, apply a commercial finance lens across the project portfolio, and work collaboratively across functions to ensure commercial discipline supports operational performance. The role carries a strong hands-on requirement, the successful candidate will operate beyond the finance function, working closely with operational and project teams across the business. A key focus will be de-risking growth through financial leadership, planning and controls as the business scales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end finance function, including management reporting, project-level P&L tracking, and job-lot accounting across concurrent projects.
  • Provide visibility on work-in-progress, bill of materials, input cost management, and job-level gross profit.
  • Work closely with construction and project managers to drive commercial accountability at the job level.
  • Implement and optimise systems and processes that support a scaling business.
  • Manage supplier and subcontractor commercial relationships, negotiating outcomes across materials, labour, and services.
  • Oversee cash flow and working capital performance, supporting growth through a combination of cash flow and strategic debt.

What You'll Bring

The role requires a financial leader with construction industry acumen and manufacturing nous, someone who grasps the operational levers that drive profitability, not just the numbers. You will bring:

  • Experience in project-based businesses with work-in-progress management, tendering, and contractor relationships, ideally blending construction or industrial project delivery with manufacturing financial disciplines.
  • Proven ability to operate as a standalone senior finance leader in a hands-on environment.
  • A track record of implementing and optimising systems in a growing business.
  • CA or CPA qualified with strong technical accounting skills.
  • Cultural fit with a founder-led business – hungry, humble, and smart, with genuine commitment to the long-term journey.
  • Melbourne-based, with a preference for being on-site regularly.
