Planner

TransGrid

ABOUT TRANSGRID

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network powering homes, businesses, and communities. As Australia accelerates its energy transition, the work we do has never been more significant.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Good scheduling is not a back-office function. On large capital projects, the schedule is one of the most important tools the project team has for understanding where the program stands, what is at risk and what decisions need to be made. A Planner who maintains accurate, well-structured schedules and can communicate what they mean makes a real difference to how projects are run.

We are looking for a Planner to join the Delivery group and take responsibility for maintaining project schedules across a portfolio of capital projects. Reporting to the Project Controls Manager, you will work closely with Senior Planners, Project Managers, Cost Controllers and Commercial teams to keep project schedules current, accurate and useful. You will also assist with Earned Value Assessment and contribute to monthly reporting on project performance.

This role suits someone who has come out of a construction or engineering background and wants to build a career in project controls. You will work alongside experienced Senior Planners who will support your development, and you will be given increasing responsibility as your skills grow. The work sits across Transgrid's capital delivery program which includes substation upgrades, transmission line works, synchronous condenser installations and data centre connection projects.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Your work will vary depending on where projects are in the delivery cycle. Here is a sense of what you will be doing across the role.

  • Schedule Development and Maintenance: Assisting with the development and maintenance of high-level and detailed project schedules in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project. You keep schedules updated with progress information, flag issues that could affect the critical path and make sure the data behind the schedule is accurate.
  • Master Program Integration: Assisting with integrating multiple project schedules into a master program schedule and working through solutions when schedules conflict. You help identify where competing resource demands or program clashes need to be resolved.
  • Contractor Schedule Review: Reviewing contractor delivery schedules to check they meet Transgrid Health Check requirements and align with overall project scope and objectives. You support Senior Planners in the assessment of Extensions of Time and monthly progress claims.
  • Earned Value Assessment: Assisting with data collection and preparation of Earned Value assessments in collaboration with the Senior Planner and project team. You help prepare reports on Schedule Performance Index, Cost Performance Index and progress S-Curves so the project leadership team can see clearly where the program stands.
  • Monthly Reporting: Contributing to monthly project performance reports including Critical Path Analysis and forecast completion dates. You make sure the information going to stakeholders is accurate, clear and delivered on time.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Working closely with Project Managers, Cost Controllers, Commercial teams and other project controls colleagues to keep schedule information aligned across the project. You communicate schedule updates clearly and make sure the right people have the information they need when they need it.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Transgrid's capital program is significant in scale and in consequence. The projects being delivered across the portfolio, from substation upgrades and transmission line construction through to synchronous condenser installations and data centre connections, are the infrastructure that keeps the NSW and ACT grid reliable through a period of rapid change.

A well-maintained schedule gives the project team the visibility it needs to make good decisions. When a Planner does their job well, problems get spotted early, resources are deployed where they are needed and projects have a better chance of finishing on time. That matters on projects of this scale.

This is also a role where you can genuinely grow. Transgrid's project controls team has experienced Senior Planners who invest in developing the people around them, and there is a clear pathway for someone who performs well here to take on greater responsibility over time.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a background in construction or engineering and some exposure to project planning and scheduling. You do not need to have all the answers on day one but you do need to be detail-oriented, willing to learn and able to work well in a team environment.

  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline such as engineering, construction management or a related field.
  • Experience with construction project planning and reporting, including working with project schedules in a delivery environment.
  • Practical experience creating and maintaining schedules in Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project.
  • Strong command of Excel and other Microsoft Office tools with good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work across project teams and convey schedule information clearly to different audiences.
  • Ability to manage your own workload, take initiative and work to a high standard with minimal supervision.
  • Prior experience in the engineering and construction phases of projects, ideally in a site-based or field engineering capacity.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience in the power industry or on large substation and transmission line projects.
  • Experience with earned value reporting including SPI, CPI and S-Curve preparation.
  • Exposure to schedule risk analysis and basis of schedule documentation.
  • Site engineering or construction supervision background that supports a practical understanding of how work gets done in the field.
  • Experience working within a project controls function on capital infrastructure projects.
