About the Role

We're interested in running AI experiments that actually come to life. To drive this, we are looking for a developer who can take a proof of concept, figure out how to build it properly and safely, deploy it into our cloud environment and watch it make a real difference.

As an Emerging Technology Developer , you'll be hands-on across the stack designing, building, testing and shipping solutions that improve member experiences and health outcomes, and help carry HBF's innovation agenda forward. You'll turn strategic ideas into scalable, working software, and you'll be one of the people showing the rest of the organisation what's genuinely possible with AI and emerging tech.

You'll work alongside the Head of Emerging Technology and senior developers, plug into our AI Centre of Excellence, and partner with our Change Engine squads to push new concepts into reality on a regular cadence. Expect to experiment, build proofs of concept, learn fast, and be honest about what works.

This is a role for a builder who cares about the craft and the outcome, and someone who wants their code to matter from day one.

What You'll Do

  • Build and ship. Develop, test and deploy innovative solutions that align with our vision to create a healthier tomorrow taking proof of concepts through experimentation to practical, scalable implementations.
  • Work at the frontier. Get hands-on with LLMs and generative and agentic AI, alongside .NET, AWS and MCP, integrations, and data analysis. You'll help identify and prioritise the AI and digital-health use cases worth pursuing and contribute to the architecture that supports them.
  • Do it responsibly. Build AI-powered solutions with real attention to ethical use, data privacy and model performance, working within HBF's policies, AI guidelines and best practices. In health, getting this right isn't optional, it's the point.
  • Collaborate widely. Partner with cross-functional teams' testers, architects, business analysts and various squads to translate requirements into solutions, troubleshoot, and continuously improve how we build.
  • Share what you know. Bring others along by sharing your technical expertise, helping foster a culture of creativity, experimentation and continuous learning, and showcasing what AI and emerging tech can do for your colleagues.

This position is based in Perth on a permanent, full-time basis.

About You

You're a sharp, curious problem-solver who enjoys getting to the bottom of how things work and finding better ways to do them. You don't need to be a developer - what matters is strong critical thinking, solid business understanding, and the confidence to use practical AI tools to make an impact. You're comfortable working independently within clear guardrails, and you bring people along with you through change.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years in software development ideally in healthcare, insurance or technology.
  • Strong critical thinking and process analysis skills, with the ability to frame ambiguous problems and design better ways of working.
  • Proficiency across .NET, databases, integration and analytics.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and AI, LLMs, generative and agentic AI.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies and design thinking.
  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and to work well inside cross-functional teams delivering innovation projects.
  • A knack for devising solutions from limited information, weighing multiple perspectives and thinking about future implications.
  • Optionally: previous experience in a development or innovation team; modern web/mobile frameworks (e.g. React), Salesforce (Apex) or other languages such as Python, Rust, Go or Java; and experience designing, building and implementing solutions in AWS or Azure.
